Teething is a natural phase in every baby's life, but it can be a challenging time for both parent and child. Understanding the teething process is crucial in selecting the right teether toy. We will delve into the stages of teething, common symptoms, and how teething toys can provide relief.
Safety First - Choosing Non-Toxic Materials
When it comes to teether toys, safety should always be a top priority. Babies explore the world through mouthing objects, so it's essential to select non-toxic materials. We will discuss the different materials commonly used in teething toys, such as silicone, natural rubber, and wood, highlighting their safety features and potential allergenic concerns.
Texture Matters - Finding the Right Bite
The texture of a teether toy plays a crucial role in providing comfort and relief to your baby's sore gums. Smooth or textured, soft or firm - finding the right bite is essential. We will explore different textures available in teething toys and how they stimulate your baby's senses while soothing their discomfort.
Shape and Size - Ergonomics for Tiny Hands
Babies have small hands and developing motor skills, so the shape and size of a teether toy can greatly impact their ability to hold and manipulate it. From rings to keys, animals to fruits - we will examine the various shapes and sizes available and provide insights into which ones are most suitable for your baby's age and developmental stage.
Section 5: Multi-Sensory Magic - Engaging the Senses
Teething toys that engage multiple senses can enhance your baby's overall teething experience. We will explore toys with crinkle sounds, bright colors, different textures, and even cooling features. Discover how these multi-sensory toys can provide not only relief but also stimulation and entertainment for your little one.
Choosing the perfect teether toy for your baby is a decision that requires thoughtful consideration. By understanding the teething process, prioritizing safety, considering texture, shape, and size, and opting for multi-sensory options, you can ensure a soothing and enjoyable teething journey for your little one. So, let's peel back the layers of this intriguing subject and discover the wonders that lie within daycare infant care practices.
Ensuring the safety, well-being, and healthy development of infants is the utmost priority for daycares. These facilities follow specific protocols and guidelines to create a nurturing and stimulating environment that supports infants' cognitive, social, emotional, and physical growth. From nutrition to sleep routines, daycares employ various strategies backed by scientific research to provide excellent care for these little ones.
Daycares recognize the critical role of proper nutrition in supporting infants' growth and development. To meet their nutritional needs, daycares follow specific protocols. They carefully design menus in consultation with pediatric dieticians or nutritionists to offer a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients.
These menus include age-appropriate meals that incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and dairy products. Adhering to guidelines established by reputable organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), daycares ensure that infants receive the necessary nutrients for optimal growth.
According to research published in The Journal of Pediatrics (2017), daycare-provided meals tend to be more nutritious compared to those consumed at home by children aged 1-4 years old. This study emphasizes how daycares play an essential role in addressing nutritional concerns among young children.
Daycare centers understand the importance of early cognitive development in infants. They incorporate various activities into their daily routines that stimulate learning and brain development.
Infants are engaged with age-appropriate toys and sensory materials specifically designed to promote exploration skills. These toys not only entertain but also enhance fine motor skills while providing sensory stimulation through different textures and shapes.
Research conducted by Harvard University's Center on the Developing Child indicates that early experiences directly impact brain development. Thus, daycare centers play a pivotal role in providing infants with stimulating environments that promote their cognitive growth.
Daycares recognize the significance of fostering social and emotional growth from an early age. They create nurturing environments where infants feel safe, secure, and emotionally supported.
Through positive interactions and gentle guidance, caregivers develop strong relationships with the infants under their care. This not only fosters trust but also promotes emotional well-being. Daycare centers often organize activities that encourage social interaction among infants, such as group play or music sessions.
According to a study published in Child Development (2012), high-quality childcare programs positively influence children's social-emotional skills. These programs emphasize warm caregiver-child relationships, which are essential for infants' social and emotional development.
To ensure a comfortable sleep environment for infants, daycares establish specific routines to manage nap times effectively. These routines typically involve creating a calm and quiet space conducive to sleep.
Daycares often provide separate cribs or sleep areas for each infant to guarantee privacy and minimize disturbances during nap times. Caregivers follow individual sleep schedules tailored to each child's needs while providing soothing techniques like gentle rocking or soft lullabies.
Numerous studies highlight the importance of quality sleep in early childhood development. According to research published in Pediatrics (2016), sufficient sleep positively impacts cognitive functioning and emotional regulation in young children. Thus, daycares prioritize creating an optimal sleep environment to support infants' overall well-being.
In conclusion, daycares go above and beyond to ensure the safety, well-being, and healthy development of the infants under their care. By following specific protocols regarding nutrition, engaging in stimulating activities for cognitive development, nurturing social-emotional growth through positive interactions, and managing nap times effectively, daycares create an environment that supports infants' growth and development.

As caregivers, we have to rely on observation and understanding to ensure the well-being of these little bundles of joy. In this case study, we'll explore how daycares take care of infants during their teething phase and the vital role infant teethers play in providing comfort.
Meet Emily, a dedicated daycare provider who has been caring for infants for over a decade. One sunny morning, she welcomed little Emma into her daycare center with open arms. However, she soon discovered that Emma was going through the challenging teething stage. Her continuous fussiness and irritability made it clear that something needed to be done.
Understanding the discomfort faced by teething infants is crucial for any daycare provider or parent. It requires patience, empathy, and a willingness to try various techniques until finding one that works best for each child individually.
Transitioning from milk to solid food is a monumental milestone in an infant's life. However, this also means introducing new sensations inside their mouths which can trigger discomfort during teething. To ease Emma's pain during this critical phase of her development, Emily decided to use infant teethers.
Infant teethers are specially designed toys that provide relief from sore gums by offering a safe object for babies to chew on. Made from soft materials like silicone or rubber, they gently massage the gums while stimulating saliva production – nature's way of cleansing bacteria naturally present in the mouth.
By incorporating infant teethers into her daily routine with Emma and other teething infants at her daycare center, Emily observed remarkable improvements in their behavior and overall mood throughout the day. The soothing effect provided by these innovative devices allowed the little ones to find comfort and distraction from their teething discomforts, contributing to a more peaceful and enjoyable environment for both the babies and their caregivers.
The results were astounding. Emily noticed that infants who used teethers experienced fewer bouts of fussiness, crying, and sleep disruptions during their teething phase. By offering these safe and effective chew toys, daycare providers like Emily play a pivotal role in ensuring the well-being of infants under their care.
In conclusion, it is crucial for daycares and parents alike to understand how to take care of infants during their teething phase. Ensuring utmost cleanliness is crucial in protecting our babies from potential illnesses and infections. Additionally, offering them age-appropriate teether toys specifically designed for 4-month-olds is essential for their overall development. So let’s dive into the world of hygienic toy care and explore some fantastic options tailored to cater to the needs of our adorable 4-month-old explorers. Trust us; you won't want to miss out on these valuable insights! But first things first – let's uncover how to clean those beloved baby teether toys effectively.
As responsible parents, ensuring the hygiene of your baby's teether toys is paramount to safeguard their health and well-being. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore evidence-based methods and techniques to safely clean baby teether toys for optimal hygiene, specifically tailored to babies at the age of four months.
Properly cleaning baby teether toys is crucial as these toys often end up in your little one's mouth, providing comfort during the teething process. Regular cleaning helps eliminate harmful bacteria or contaminants that could pose health risks to your baby.
Research has shown that uncleaned or improperly cleaned teether toys can harbor potentially dangerous bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus or Escherichia coli (E.coli) (Reference: Study conducted by X et al., Journal of Pediatrics, Year). These pathogens can cause infections or illnesses when ingested by your baby, leading to discomfort and potential medical complications.
Maintaining proper hygiene through regular cleaning helps reduce the risk of bacterial contamination and ensures a safe teething experience for your little one.
To effectively clean baby teether toys, it is important to adopt evidence-based methods that eliminate bacteria and ensure optimal hygiene. Here are scientifically proven techniques you can use:
a) Dishwashing: Place the teether toys in a dishwasher-safe container or mesh bag designed for infant item cleaning. Use a mild detergent devoid of harsh chemicals or fragrances that may cause allergic reactions in babies.
b) Boiling: Certain teething toys made from materials like silicone or hard plastic can be sanitized effectively by boiling them. Submerge the toys in boiling water and let them boil for approximately five minutes before carefully removing them with tongs.
c) Vinegar Soaking: Create a solution by mixing equal parts distilled white vinegar and water in a bowl or basin. Soak the teething toys in this mixture for about 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with clean water before air-drying.
For thorough cleaning and sterilization of your baby's teether toys, considering scientifically proven techniques and tools is essential. Here are some expert-recommended options:
a) Toothbrush or Soft-Bristle Brush: Use a small toothbrush or soft-bristle brush to reach crevices and hard-to-clean areas. Scrub gently using mild soapy water to remove debris or grime effectively.
b) Mesh Bag or Container: Utilize dishwasher-safe mesh bags or containers specifically designed for cleaning baby items. These aids prevent teether toys from getting lost during the dishwasher cycle and protect them from damage.
c) Boiling Water: Boiling teething toys ensures effective elimination of bacteria and germs. However, ensure the material can withstand high temperatures without warping.
Regular cleaning of your baby's teether toys is crucial to maintain optimal hygiene due to their frequent contact with your little one's mouth. It is generally recommended to clean teething toys at least once a day using one of the aforementioned methods.
Additionally, always inspect the toys for signs of wear and tear; discard those that are damaged beyond repair to prevent potential hazards.
In conclusion, ensuring proper hygiene for your 4-month-old's teether toys is essential for their overall health and well-being. By following evidence-based cleaning methods, utilizing safe solutions, and employing scientifically proven techniques and tools, you can ensure your baby enjoys their teething experience while minimizing risks associated with unsanitary conditions. If you're a parent navigating the challenging world of teething, you understand the importance of keeping your little one's toys clean and hygienic. Baby teether toys provide comfort and relief to teething babies, but they can also accumulate harmful bacteria if not cleaned regularly. In this article, we will discuss the best methods for cleaning baby teether toys while ensuring their safety and effectiveness in soothing your baby's teething discomfort.
When it comes to cleaning baby teether toys, simplicity often prevails. One of the most effective and safe methods is using gentle soap and water. By following these steps, you can ensure thorough cleaning:
Step 1: Fill a basin or sink with warm water.
Step 2: Add a small amount of mild dishwashing soap to create a soapy solution.
Step 3: Gently scrub the toy with a soft brush or cloth to remove any dirt or residue.
Step 4: Pay special attention to any textured areas where bacteria may hide.
Step 5: Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all traces of soap.
Step 6: Allow the toy to air dry completely before giving it back to your baby.
Scientific Reference: According to a study published in Pediatrics & Child Health, washing baby toys with mild soap effectively removes germs without compromising their safety or efficacy in providing relief during teething (source).
For parents who prefer natural remedies, vinegar can be an effective cleanser for baby teether toys. Follow these steps for optimal results:
Step 1: Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a bowl or basin.
Step 2: Submerge the toy into the solution for approximately 10 minutes.
Step 3: Remove the toy from the solution and rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Step 4: Ensure all traces of vinegar are removed to prevent any lingering smell.
Step 5: Allow the toy to air dry completely before returning it to your baby.
Scientific Reference: A study conducted by researchers at The Ohio State University found that acetic acid present in vinegar exhibited antimicrobial effects against a wide range of bacteria (source).
Sometimes, baby teether toys develop stubborn stains that can be challenging to remove with soap and water alone. In such cases, baking soda can come to the rescue. Follow these steps for effective stain removal:
Step 1: Create a paste by mixing baking soda with water until it forms a thick consistency.
Step 2: Apply the paste to the stained areas of the toy using a soft brush or cloth.
Step 3: Gently scrub the stained areas, paying attention not to damage the toy's surface.
Step 4: Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all traces of baking soda paste.
Step 5; Allow the toy to air dry completely before giving it back to your baby.
Transition: Now that you're armed with effective cleaning methods for baby teether toys, it's important to understand how frequently you should clean them and any specific precautions needed.
To ensure your baby's teething toys remain hygienic, it is recommended to clean them at least once a day or after each use. Babies explore their world through mouthing objects, so frequent cleaning helps reduce the risk of harmful bacteria buildup on their toys. Additionally, if your child falls ill or you notice visible dirt or residue on the toy, immediate cleaning is necessary.
Scientific Reference: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends washing all baby items that come into contact with saliva daily, including teething toys (source).
Silicone and rubber teether toys are popular choices due to their durability and flexibility. When cleaning these types of toys, take extra precautions to ensure their longevity and safety:
- Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that may damage the material.
- Regularly inspect the toy for signs of wear and tear; replace any damaged teethers promptly.
- Ensure thorough drying after washing silicone or rubber teethers as moisture can lead to mold growth.
By following these additional steps, you can maintain the integrity and safety of your baby's silicone or rubber teether toys.
In conclusion, cleaning baby teether toys plays a crucial role in ensuring they remain hygienic and safe for your little one. Utilizing gentle soap and water, vinegar, and baking soda can effectively eliminate bacteria while keeping the toys soothing during the teething process. Remember to clean them regularly, paying extra attention to silicone or rubber teethers. Having a certified infant care teacher is crucial for your baby's development and well-being. According to research, children who receive quality early childhood education are more likely to have higher academic achievement, better social skills, and increased emotional regulation (Grigg & Whitehurst 2018). This is because trained professionals understand the importance of creating safe environments that promote learning through play. They also possess the knowledge and experience to identify any developmental delays or issues in a child's growth process, allowing them to provide necessary interventions at an earlier stage. Additionally, having a certified teacher means they have undergone thorough background checks and training on safety protocols which gives parents peace of mind knowing their child is in good hands.

Do NOT do calorie counts on your baby. As you can see, your baby’s calorie needs will increase as she grows.
Real mom tip: baby’s appetite can vary from day to day. This advice also applies to older children. Focus on what your child eats over the space of a week, not every meal. Let’s put this in bold: Obsessing over every once of milk/formula or spoonful of rice cereal isn’t healthy for you or your baby.
That said, here’s how many calories a baby typically needs to eat per day (given yyour baby’s weight in kilograms):
Don’t know your baby’s weight in kilos? To convert pounds to kilograms, divide the weight in pounds by 2.2. For example, a baby weighing seven pounds would weigh 3.2 kilograms.
Now that we have all the formulas, let’s figure out how many calories your average seven pound newborn will need each day to grow normally. Realize this is a ballpark figure because each person has individual energy (calorie) needs. Your little 3.2kg bundle of joy needs between 288-384 calories per day (3.2×90 or 120). Breast milk and formula have 20 calories per ounce. So divide 288 or 384 by 20 calories per once and you’ll find that your baby needs to consume about 15 -19 ounces a day. But, once again, obsessing over every ounce will only give you an overwhelming need for Zantac.
A word on preemies: Premature babies have higher calorie needs to catch up on their growth. Some babied go home from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with a higher calorie diet requirement. This is achieved with either higher-calorie formula or a special human-milk fortifier that is added to expressed (pumped) breast milk.
A word on big babies: The calorie calculations we’ve made here are accurate for average sized babies. All babied gradually increase their daily breast milk/formula intake and eventually max out at about 40 oz. A day. Average-sized babied get to that point at four to six months of age. A ten-pound newborn may reach that 40 oz. A day maximum before his friends do and will just stick to that daily volume. We point this out so you don’t try to give him 50 or 60 oz. At six months of age.
For the mathematically challenged (that is, us writers) and for those who have forgotten the metric system, here are the common conversions you’ll need to digest this article:
cc (cubic centimeter) or ml (milliliter) are ways of measuring fluid volumes.
1cc = 1ml
5cc or 5ml = 1 teaspoon
15cc or 15ml = 1 tablespoon
3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon
There are 30cc per ounce, or 2 tablespoons per ounce (oz).
There are 16 ounces (oz) in 1 pound (lb).
There are 2.2 pounds in 1 kilogram (kg).
Insider Secret
A simple (but less accurate calculation): Babies from two weeks to there months of age need to eat approximately 2.5 oz. per pound of body weight. (West)
BOTTOM LINE
Do NOT calculate your baby’s dietary needs at every moment. You will drive yourself, your spouse (and your doctor) nuts. This is especially challenging to do if you are breastfeeding and can’t see the volume. It’s just helpful information to help you gauge things.
]]>Before we give you all of our sage advice on this subject, it is essential that you understand the science of sleep. Knowing the basics will help you appreciate the advice and avoid the common mistakes parents make.
Q: Do newborns have the same sleep patterns that adults do?
A: NO. That’s why you cannot expect them to sleep like we do. Here are four important concepts you need to understand.
Newborns spend 50-80% of their sleep in REM sleep while adults spend only 25% of their sleep in REM. The result: babies are very active when they are asleep. Your baby will be noisy and moving around, but he is not awake.
BOTTOM LINE: Your baby’s sleep activity and noises do not mean you need to feed or help them.
MOMBELLA KOALA SOOTHING PACIFIER
BOTTOM LINE: Leave your baby alone when he has a partial wakening. He will enter into his next sleep cycle if you leave him alone. If you intervene, you will wake him up. As the saying goes, let sleeping babies lie.
BOTTOM LINE: Your baby has shorter sleep cycles than you. It can take several months until he has mature sleep patterns like an older child.
BOTTOM LINE: It takes several weeks for a baby to get their circadian rhythm sorted out. If you lived in the dark for nine months, you’d probably be a little confused too.
Q: How can I get my baby to sleep at night instead of during the day?
A: This is called Day-Night Reversal. It usually takes three or four weeks to resolve.
The best way to help your baby through this is to stimulate him during the day and keep things low key at night. Talk to your baby during daylight hours and encourage any wakeful periods he has. At night, do your feeding routine with little interaction. Only turn the lights on if you have a poopy diaper to clean. If your baby decides he wants to have a slumber party, he can party (coo, grunt, etc) on his own. You don’t have to be by his side to entertain him.
Q: How much should a newborn sleep?
A:About 14 to 18 hours total a day.
But here’s the cruel part: most newborns will not sleep more than four hours at a stretch. They need to eat frequently and their little bodies know it.
BOTTOM LINE: Most newborns have six or seven stretched of sleep every 24 hours. Feeding occur in between these stretches.
Helpful Hints
Three Sleep Tips for the First Two Weeks of life
Q: How do I get my newborn to fall asleep? He seems to have trouble relaxing.
A: It would be nice to have the baby who awakens to feed and then goes right back to sleep. More likely, you have the baby who eats and then fusses until you help him return to the Land of Nod.
After you and your baby get to know each other better, you will figure out what helps him settle down.
Newborns are born with immature nervous systems. That means, they don’t have the ability to pull it together, relax, and fall asleep. The most reliable way babies know how to settle down is to suck.

Q: How do sleep patterns and needs change as baby grows?
A: Check out this information as well as the handy sleep requirements chart nearby for details. Remember, these are general guidelines. No need to freak out if your baby doesn’t follow these numbers to a tee!

]]>Many articles report that babies can start baby solid foods between 4 and 6 months. But you need to be careful about what you read on the internet! The major advisory organizations you can trust on infant health, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization, all suggest waiting until 6 months to begin baby solid foods.
Between the ages of 6 and 12 months, baby is still getting all of his necessary nutrition and calories from breast milk and/or formula. You introduce baby solid foods during this time not for nutrition but more for fun and trying to get baby to like the taste of healthy baby solid foods. This is why baby solid foods during this phrase are referred to as complementary. Baby solid foods complement the nutrition that baby is getting from breast milk or baby formula.
It can take up to 8 days to get a baby to prefer a taste, so don’t give up too easily or move on to the next baby solid food quickly. For example, if you start with peas, try feeding your baby only peas (as the complement to breast milk or formula) for a week. He may or may not like something on the first try, but slow and persistent exposure is key to teaching him to accept baby solid foods and the actual food itself.
Be mindful of the texture and thickness. Remember, baby is used to liquid, so whatever you feed him should be close to a liquid consistency when you start. You can gradually offer thicker textures and at some point add small, soft chunks, but for now the texture should be very thin (you can thin out fruits and veggies with formula, breast milk, or water).
Don’t ever force anything on your baby, whether it’s a particular baby solid food she doesn’t like or the food she’s lost interest in before finishing all ounces that you’ve prepared. Keep in mind that it is essential to respect your baby’s internal hunger cues. You can always take a break and try again later if baby seems fussy or disinterested in eating.
Don’t forget that growing infants learn by copying, ans research shows babies are more likely to eat baby solid foods they see their parents eating. So try to eat with baby to model behaviors you want to see from them.
Oats are a great grain to start with because they are naturally high in iron. You can process rolled oats (not quick-cooking or instant) into a fine powder in the blender or food processor for a smooth fiber- and mineral-rich baby cereal that you can mix with fruit or vegetable puree as baby is introduced to more foods.
¼ cup rolled oats
⅔ cup water
Put the oats in a blender or food processor and process to a fine powder. Bring the water to a boil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Whisk in the oatmeal powder and lower the heat. Cook, stirring continually, until the water is absorbed and the cereal is thickened and smooth, 1 to 2 minutes. (If it’s too thick, thin with a little cool water, breast milk, or formula.) Let it cool to room temperature before feeding baby.
Make ahead: Process a few cups of oats at a time and store the powder in a jar so that you can quickly cook individual portions. For toddlers and older kids, you can process the powder a little more coarsely and use this instead of quick-cooking oats, which have been processed to remove their nutritious outer hull, or instant oats, which often have lots of added sugar.
Sweet potatoes are packed with healthy carbohydrates, as well as vitamins A, B6, and C. Their naturally sweet flavor and creamy texture make them an appealing early choice for baby. Once baby gets used to the flavor of sweet potatoes on their own, mix sweet potato puree with a little apple or pear puree.
Bake several sweet potatoes at once so that you (and the rest of the family) can enjoy them for lunch or dinner, too. (For adults and older kids, try them sliced lengthwise and topped with black beans, salsa, a spoonful of yogurt, and a squeeze of lime.)
One 8- to 12-ounce sweet potato
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Scrub the sweet potato well with a vegetable brush under running water. Prick in several places with a sharp paring knife, then place on a baking sheet or pan. Bake until very soft when you pierce it with a knife, 45 to 60 minutes. Let cool to room temperature. Slice the sweet potato in half lengthwise, scoop the cooked potato from the skin, and place in the bowl of a food processor.
Process until smooth; add a little water as necessary to get a smooth consistency. (Discard the skin or, since it is so nutritious, you may want to use as shells to stuff for an older kid or an adult.) When baby is ready to handle a little more texture, you can mash the sweet potato coarsely with a fork, and eventually graduate to offering her small soft pieces to feed herself.
To store: Refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze individual portions for up to 3 months.
Summer brings an abundance of fresh fruits with plenty of vitamins A and C, like nectarines and sweet cantaloupe. Make this tangy fruit puree in the peak of the season when fresh nectarines and cantaloupe are sweet and juicy. Substitute peaches or plums for nectarines, if you have them. Sweet honeydew melon and tart kiwi fruit are another good combination; the kiwi can be peeled and pureed without steaming.
1 ripe nectarine, halved and pitted
1 cup cubed cantaloupe
Bring about an inch of water to a boil in a pan fitted with a steamer. Place the nectarine in the steamer, cover, and steam until the fruit is soft when you pierce it with a knife and the skins are loose, 5 to 7 minutes. Let cool. Remove the skin with a sharp paring knife.
Place the nectarine and cantaloupe in a blender or food processor. Process until smooth before feeding baby.
To store: Refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze individual portions for up to 3 months
As baby branches out into new flavors, give ripe peaches a try, mixed with healthy fat–rich whole-milk yogurt for added calcium, protein, and vitamin B12. Mixing your own yogurt and fruit is a good way to offer baby a chance to get used to the flavor of fruit yogurt without all the added sugar of commercial types. This recipe makes more than enough for you and baby to share, or store for a second meal.
1 ripe peach, halved and peeled
½ cup plain whole-milk yogurt
A few drops alcohol-free vanilla extract (optional)
Bring an inch or so of water to a boil in a pan fitted with a steamer. Place the peach in the steamer, cover, and steam until the fruit is soft when you pierce it with a knife and the skins
are loose, 4 to 6 minutes. Let cool. Use a sharp paring knife to remove the peach skins. Mash the peach with a fork to the consistency that’s right for your baby. Spoon the yogurt into a bowl and stir in the vanilla (if using). Top with the peach.
To store: Refrigerate for up to 2 days or freeze individual portions of mashed peach for up to3 months.
Beets may have a bad rap with some adults, but cooked baby beets are earthy and sweet. Plus they’re a good source of folate, which continues to be important for brain development. Mixing beets with apple into a vibrant pink puree is a good way to introduce baby to their flavor. Also, the combination of beets and apples gives baby a healthy dose of vitamin C.
4 baby beets
2 apples
¼ teaspoon fresh grated ginger
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Remove the green tops and trim the stem ends from the beets.Scrub the beets well.
Place the beets in a small baking pan and fill the pan with about ½ inch of water, then cover tightly with aluminum foil. Bake until the beets are very soft when you pierce them with a knife, 40 to 50 minutes. Let cool and then use a paring knife to peel the beets. Cut them into halves or quarters. Meanwhile, peel, core, and slice the apples. Bring an inch or so of water to a boil in a pan fitted with a steamer. Place the apples in the steamer, cover, and steam until soft, about 5 minutes. Combine the beets, apples, and ginger in a food processor. Puree until smooth, adding water a tablespoon at a time as necessary for the right consistency, before feeding baby.
To store: Refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze individual portions for up to 3 months.
This mildly flavored, vitamin B12 power puree introduces baby to the flavor of edamame, which will be a favorite finger food later. Steam the edamame until very tender to get a smooth puree.
1 cup frozen, shelled, unsalted edamame
½ ripe avocado
Bring an inch or so of water to a boil in a pan fitted with a steamer. Place the edamame in the steamer, cover, and steam until the beans are soft when you pierce them with a knife and the skins are loose, 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer the edamame to a food processor. Process, adding a few tablespoons of water at a time as needed to get a smooth consistency. Add the avocado and process until smooth before feeding baby.
To store: Refrigerate for up to 2 days.
Don’t overlook cauliflower! This humble vegetable may be pale but it’s a surprising source of vitamins C and K, and it gives this smooth potato puree extra nutrients and flavor. Be sure to steam the cauliflower and potatoes until very tender so they are easily mashed. This delicious dish also gives baby a healthy dose of zinc from the potato.
¾ pound cauliflower florets, cut into ½-inch chunks
¼ pound Yukon gold or other thin-skinned potatoes, peeled and cut into ½-inch
chunks
¼ teaspoon mild curry powder
Bring several inches of water to a boil in a pan fitted with a steamer. Place the cauliflower and potatoes in the steamer, cover, and steam until both vegetables are tender when you pierce them with a knife, 7 to 9 minutes. Transfer the vegetables to a bowl and add the curry powder; mash until smooth—or transfer to a food processor and pulse, adding water, a few tablespoons at a time, as necessary to get the consistency you want—before feeding baby.
To store: Refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze individual portions for up to 3 months.

]]>Even with tremendous effort and plenty of support, breastfeeding does not always go well for every mother-infant pair. In other cases, parents who recognize the benefits of breadfeeding may still prefer bottle-feeding. Some believe bottle-feeding provides more freedom and time for activities. Dad, granparents, sitters, and even older siblings can feed an infant breast milk or formula in a bottle. This may give some mothers more flexibility. There are other reasons some feel more comfortable with bottle-feeding, such as knowing exactly how much food the baby is getting. Others prefer formula-feeding for reasons such as not needing to worry about the mother's diet or medications that might affect the milk.
Even so, it is impossible for fomula manufaturers to reproduce the components that make break milk from mothers so unique. Althhough formula does provide the basic nutrients for an infant, it lacks the antibodies, some of the specific components and sugars that feed good bacteria in a baby's gut, and many of the other components found in breast milk. Formula-feeding is also costly and may be inconvenient for some families. The formula must be bought and prepared or otherwise managed, and you'll need a reliable source of clean water for mixing the formula. This means trips to the kitchen in the middle of the night, as well as extra bottles, nipples, and other equipment.
If you have decided to bettle-feed your baby, you'll start by selecting a fomula. Your pediatrician will help you pick one based on your baby's needs. Today there are several varieties and brands of commerical formulas from which to choose, all of which are equally safe and nutritious. The American Academy of Pediatrician does not recommend homemade baby formulas, since they can be deficient in vitamins and other important nutrients and may be contaminated with potentially harmful bacteria.
Most infant formulas are available in ready-to-feed liquid forms, concentrates, and powders. Although ready-to-feed formulas are very convenient, they are also the most expensive. Formula from concentrate is prepared by adding water as the manufacturer directs. Unused concentrate may be covered and refrigerated for no more than forty-eight hours. Powder, the least expensive, comes either in premeasured packets or in a larger can. Most powdered formula requires one level scoop of powder for every 2 ounces (60 ml) of water. Mix thoroughly to ensure that tere are no clumps of undissovled powder. Always read the label instructions for mixing the formula properly.
Aside from the price, powder is also light and portable. The powder will not sopil, even if it stays in the bottle several days before adding water. If you choose a formula requiring preparation, be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions exactly. Too much water and your baby won't ge tthe calories and nutrients needed for proper growth; too little and the extra-concentrated formula could cause diarrhea or dehydration and will give your infant more calories than needed.
If you use well water or are concerned abour the safty of your tap water, boil it for approximately one minitute before adding it to the formula, making sure to let it return to room temperature before feeding. (If there is any concern, it may be a goos idea to have your well water tested for bacteria or other contaminants.) You also can use bottled water.
Powdered infant formula is not commercially sterile and has been associated with a severe illness attributed to Cronobacter bacteria. However, the illness is very rare and the Wold Health Organization (WTO) has issued guidelines to improve the safety of powdered infant formula. The CDC and other US organizations recommend heating the water at least 158 degrees Fahreheit (70 degrees Celsius) before mixing with powder to reduce the possibility of infection with this bacteria. These instructions may be found at: cdc.gov/features/cronobacter.
Make sure all bottles, nipples, and other utensils used in preparation and feeding are clean. If your home has chlorinated water, a dishwasher or hot tap water with dishwashing detergent can be used. Rinse in hot tap water. For nonchlorinated water, boil the ustensils for five to ten minutes.
Store formula prepared in advance in the refirgerator to discourage bacterial growth. Unused refirgerated formula should be discarded after twenty-four hours. Refrigerated formula doesn't necessarily have to be warmed, but most infants prefer it at least at room temperature. To warm it, you can either leave the bottle out for an hour or warm it in a pan of hot water (again, do not use a microwave). If you warm it, tets it in advance to makr sure it's not too hot by shaking a few drops onto the inside of your wrist.
Bottles may be glass or plastic and may have a soft plastic liner. These inner liners are convenient and may limit the amount of air your baby swallows when feeding, but they are also more expensive. As your baby begins holding the bottle herself, avoid using breakable glass bottles. Also, bottles designed to promote self-feeding are not recommended, as they may contribute to early childhood caries (ECC, formerly known as baby bottle tooth decay) by promoting constant feeding and overexposing the teeth to sugars. When milk or any other sugar-containing liquid sits in contact with tooth enamel over a prolonged period of time, bacterial overgrowth and acid production occurs. ECC is most commonly seen in children six months and older who bottle or breastfeed to fall asleep or demand at-will feedings throughout the night. Also, self-feeding while lying on the back has been shown to contribute occasionally to ear infections. A bottle should not be given to suck on overnight. If you give your infant a bedtime feeding, take away the bottle and brush his teeth before he falls asleep to prevent ECC.
You may need to try several nipples before finding the one your baby prefers. There are standard silicone or rubber nipples, orthodontic ones, and special designs for premature infants and babies with cleft palates. Whichever type used, always check the size of the hole. If the hole is too small, your baby may suck so hard that he’ll swallow too much air; if it’s too big, the formula may flow so fast he might choke. Ideally, formula should flow from an upended bottle at a rate of one drop per second and stop dripping after a few seconds.

Feeding times should be relaxing, comforting, and enjoyable. They provide opportunities to show your love and to get to know each other. If you are calm and content, your infant will respond in kind. If you are nervous or uninterested, he may sense these negative feelings and a feeding problem can result. You will probably be most comfortable in a chair with arms or with pillows that let you prop up your arms as you feed your infant. Cradle your baby in a semi-upright position and support his head. Don’t feed him when he’s lying down flat as this will increase the risk of choking and may also cause formula to flow into the middle ear, leading to possible infection. Hold the bottle so that formula fills the neck of the bottle and fills the nipple. This will prevent your baby from swallowing air as he sucks. To get him to open his mouth and grasp the nipple, stimulate his rooting reflex by stroking the nipple against the lower lip or cheek. Once the nipple is in his mouth, he will begin to suck and swallow naturally.

Some signs that your baby may be overfeeding:
■ If bottle-fed, the baby is consuming more than 4 to 6 ounces (120 to 180 ml) per feeding.
■ She vomits most or all of the food after a complete feeding.
■ Her stools are loose and very watery, and occur eight or more times a day. (Keep in mind that breastfed babies normally tend to have much more frequent and looser stools.)
Some signs that your baby may be underfeeding:
■ If breastfed, the baby falls asleep while feeding after a short time, and does not seem satisfied after the feeding.
■ She wets fewer than four diapers per day; particularly if she has begun sleeping through the night, she may be feeding inadequately (since most babies feed at least once during the night), and may urinate less often and become mildly dehydrated.
■ She has infrequent or very hard stools in the first month.
■ She appears hungry, searching for something to suck shortly after feedings.
■ She becomes more yellow, instead of less, during the first week.
■ She seems excessively sleepy or lethargic
Signs of a feeding allergy or problem with digestion:
■ Your baby vomits most or all food after a complete feeding.
■ She produces loose and very watery stools eight or more times a day or
has blood in the stools.
■ She has a severe skin rash

]]>Teething ussally starts during these months. The two front teeth (central incisors), either upper or lower, ussally appear first, followed by the opposite front teeth. The first molars are next, followed by the canines or eyeteeth.
There is great variability in the timing and pattern of teething. If your child doesn't show any teeth until later than this age period, or if they come in out of order, don't worry. The timing may be determined by heredity, and doesn't mean anything is wrong.
Teething accasionally may cause mild irritability, crying, a low grade tempertature (but not over 101 degrees Fahrenheit [38.3 degrees Celsius]), excessive drooling, and a desire to chew on something hard. More often, the gums around the new teeth will swell and be tender. To ease your baby's discomfort, try gently rubbing or massaging the gums with one of your figures. Teething toys are helpful and should be make of firm rubber. (The teethers you freeze tend to get too hard and can cause more harm than good.) Never use teething gels to numb the gums; in rare cases they can position babies' blood cells and keep them form carrying oxygen. Homeopathic teething tablets also provide no benefits, and in some cases of they have been made with potentially harmful toxins. Amber teething necklaces do not do anything at all to relieve pain, and they have caused of choking and strangulation; remember never to leave anything around your baby's neck. If your child seems particularly miserable or has a fever higher than 101 degrees Fshrenheit (38.3 degrees Celsius), it's probably not from teething, and you should consult your pediatrician.

Your baby should see a dentist within six months after his first tooth erupts, but no later than twelve months of age, whichever comes first. Pediatric dentists are specially trained to see infants, andyou cana find a pediatric dentist for your baby at the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's website, aapd.org. But going to your family dentist for rountine pediatric care is entirely adequate and may be covered by existing health insurance.
Brushing your baby's teeth at home is very important as well. For cleaning when you first start seeing teeth, simply brush with a soft child's toothbrush and a smear of fluoridated toothpaste the size of a grain of rice. To prevent cavities, never let your baby fall asleep with a bottle or on the breast, either at nap time or at night. Doing this will keep milk from pooling around the teeth and creating a breeding ground for decay.

]]> As mentioned in the former blog, it is important to check nipple size and shape if you are bottle-feeding. Also, pay attention to your baby's positioning. If your baby's head and body are out of alignment (head, shoulders, and hips not, in a fairly straight line), this can significantly affect the latch.
You may need to provide your baby with some cheek support if your child is still having difficulty maintaining a latch. This can be a temporary measure to assist your baby in maintaining the lateral, or side, the stability needed in the mouth and bringing the lips forward to suckle properly. Cheek support can help your baby create an appropriate amount of interior mouth pressure to draw in liquid from the bottle or breast easily and efficiently.
To provide cheek support, place your thumb on one of your baby's cheeks and your index or middle finger on the other. Press gently but firmly inward toward your baby's gums while pulling your fingers slightly forward toward your baby's lips. Do not slide your fingers over your baby's skin in any direction. You will see your baby's lips flare. because the muscles of the cheeks help to move the lips. You may also see your baby's tongue cup because you are now providing the lateral stability your child needs to suckle properly.
For many years, lactation consultants have taught moms the "Dancer" hand position (ic, Mom supports the baby's cheeks and chin with her free hand while baby is nursing) to support babies' cheeks and jaws while they nursed. Some moms have found this hold difficult to maintain, particularly when using a cradle (ie, cross-over) position.
However, modified cheek support can be used with the cradle hold. Gravity is often the culprit in this situation, as gravity pulls the lower cheek toward the ground. Therefore, the lower cheek does not remain against your baby's gum surface during nursing. Appropriate pressure in the mouth is lost. Nursing moms using a cradle hold can apply gentle but firm pressure on the baby's lower cheek surface to help the baby compensate for this difficulty.
You can also give your baby a little jaw support along with cheek support if needed. This can be done by placing the area between your thumb and index finger under your baby's chin while you provide cheek support. However, it is essential that you do not stop your baby's jaw from moving or force the jaw to move in an unnatural direction. Providing jaw support is like dancing smoothly with a partner and will be discussed in detail in chapter 6.
Cheek and jaw support can help your baby to latch. However, these are usually temporary measures. Your baby may have a subtle difficulty in the mouth that is causing the latching concern. Subtle concerns are often problematic because they can be difficult to identify. These are discussed later in other blogs.
